Even visually, Finding Dory is a ificant step back from its predecessor.
The threat of not only crossing the Pacific, but rescuing Nemo from a dentist about to gift him to a fish-killing little girl, is now reduced to exploring an aquarium with a catch-and-release policy, with barely a whiff of tension. Thank you.
More from my site Was Brave the bridge too far for Pixar? Finding Dory is never as bad as Cars 2 or Monsters Universitybut that does precious little to hide that the film is still little more than a needless sequel cashing in on the reputation and beloved status of Finding Nemo.
Finding Dory manages to tread water, but not much else. Finding Nemo offered a road trip across the locales and wildlife of the Pacific, while Finding Dory spends the majority of the time in a single aquarium.
Great recommendation! It gave rise to clown fish becoming a hit fad petinspired countless quirky named seafood restaurantsbut it never needed a sequel.
Finding Dory opens with a look into the past of Dory, the forgetful fish of the first film, before fast forwarding to a year after the events of Finding Nemo. Part of that may have to do with the much reduced scope of the setting — no matter how good the folks at Pixar are, a colorful coral reef or swarm of jellyfish are just more breathtaking to look at than the browns and blues of an aquarium.
Along the way, they meet another quirky cast of characters, must escape from an aquarium, and Dory will have to come face to face with both her past, and the memory issues that have plagued her life. Which is a real shame.
I love whale sharks as much as the next guy, but I need a bit more. Like imitation crab meat, it recycles the characters and plot arcs of the first film, while missing the charm and heart of what made the original so good in the first place.
Finding Dory shrinks the scale, lowers the stakes, and the resulting movie just feels smaller, and much less effective. Of the newcomers, none of them gel quite as well as anyone from the first film.
